Making & Repairing Patterns

Every component cast at Loughborough needs a wooden pattern making first, and hundreds of them have been acquired over the past 150 years. Each pattern is used to create the mould into which the metal is poured. In making, altering or repairing the patterns care has to be taken to allow for contraction as the molten metal cools. In the photo Ross repairs and alters a “lowside” bell frame pattern to be used in casting a new bell frame for Adelaide, Australia.
