St Michael & All Angels

Alphington, Exeter

United Kingdom

This complete eight by Thomas I Bilbie dates from 1749. A full restoration was undertaken by Taylors in 1939, with the bells being tuned and new bell fittings and a cast iron and steel bell frame being provided. Major maintenance work will now be undertaken in two phases. In the first phase all the clappers, crown staples and rope roller boxes will be removed to Loughborough for complete refurbishment. Phase two involves the lifting of all the bells for the cleaning/replacement of bearings and the cleaning and painting of the bell frame.

Update

  • Phase 1 has been completed. Phase 2 is provisionally scheduled for February 2018.

  • This church tower houses a complete eight by Thomas I Bilbie that dates from 1749. In 1939 Taylor's carried out a complete and comprehensive restoration with the bells being tuned and rehung on all new fittings in a new cast iron and steel bell frame. A major maintenance contract has now been completed to keep the installation in first class order. The clappers, crown staples and rope roller boxes were all restored at Loughborough, and our bell hangers lifted each of the bells from its pit and cleaned/replaced the main roller bearings as necessary. The bell wheels and other fittings were then removed to allow proper access to the bell frame which was then thoroughly cleaned and repainted to complete the project.
