Casting A Bell With A Major Third

All bells emit partial tones when struck, and if these are tuned to the bell’s main note, it sounds musical and pleasant to the ear. Given the traditional bell shape that evolved in Western Europe one of these partial tones is a minor third, which gives our bells the slightly mournful sound our ears have come to love. But when it comes to playing tunes on bells in harmony there has been some demand to cast bells with a major third harmonic. This can be achieved, but only by altering the shape of the profile as the photo illustrates!
