The Former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower, Hong Kong, P.R.C.
The Old Railway Station Clock Tower.
John Taylor & Co (International) was contacted by the Antiquities and Monuments Office of the Hong Kong Government to work with them on the project to restore the bell originally supplied by Taylor’s to the Canton-Kowloon Railway Company in 1919. This one tonne bell in Eb which is now on a plinth in the base of the tower has been silent for decades. As travel is currently difficult, we have been working with a local firm of architects, (Philip Liao and Partners) to realise this vision. The first stage is now complete, with the sound of an equivalent Taylor bell of the period being played hourly from a recording made from the Loughborough Carillon. In the next stage to happen once travel restrictions are lifted we will be replacing the clock motors with modern ones and restoring the original bell for use should it be possible to do so.
