THE AUTOMATED SWINGING OF LARGE BELLS.

Our Chief Design Engineer Mike Semken, after a lot of experimentation and with external help to achieve a working design from Professor Pat Wheeler, Head of Power Electronic Systems at Nottingham University, has now perfected the automated swinging of large bells using a Curved Linear Motor with a Motion Controller Unit. Working experimentally with a two ton bell hung on an arched headstock designed for slow swinging, the bell is now swung automatically using a normal 240 volt electrical supply. This technology, once perfected, can be used on bells weighing as little as 5 cwts. or as much as 20 tons.

Taylor’s had already had enquiries from a number of places housing large bells who are interested in installing such equipment to allow their bells to be sounded automatically and this provided the motivation to develop the system.
