The Cathedral Church of St George Southwark, designed by the the celebrated and highly regarded Gothic Revival Architect A W N Pugin was built in 1848, though only the lowest section of its tower was completed. The two original bells were provided by C & G Mears and were dated 1847 & 1848. At the rebuilding of the cathedral following bomb damage in W W II the bells were recast and rehung by Mears & Stainbank of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry.
These bells are sounded by electrically operated clappers which are activated by a time clock controller. The controller has very limited functionality and it is not possible to add further progrms to it. A new controller unit with Wifi connectivity will be installed. This will allow the bells to be sounded together, and at different speeds according to the requirements of Mass Tolling, Funeral Tolling, Consecration during Mass, Hour Strike Facility, Wedding tolling, Gloria in Holy Week, chiming on command, pre-set chiming etc.
