John Taylor Bellfoundry Projects

Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, The Cathedral Church of St Peter, St Paul and St Andrew

June, 2025 | 2025 Projects

The largest ten bells of this 21 cwt twelve formerly hung in St John the Divine, Leicester, and were cast by Taylor’s in 1902. When they were transferred to Peterborough Cathedral on the closure of St John’s two treble bells were added by The Whitechapel Bell Foundry in 1986. The cathedral’s Taylor 1889 composite oak and cast iron bell frame was re-used and two pits were added in 1986. The 1709 Henry Penn former tenor bell from the old cathedral ring was hung as a swinging bourdon in a separate cast iron frame above the ringing peal.

An order has been placed for the cleaning and re-painting of the cast iron bell frames, and for the ringing fittings to be stripped from the bells so that their cast iron headstocks and other metal gear can be properly cleaned and painted.

* This work is scheduled to begin in August.
